In May 2023, Qlik shook up the data industry by successfully acquiring Talend, further solidifying its position in the data transformation, data quality, and data governance realm. This strategic move marked a significant boost to Qlik’s recent focus on transforming into an all-encompassing end-to-end data platform. In this blog, we discuss how Qlik got to this point and what the acquisition means for Qlik and Talend customers.

Qlik, for years, has established itself as a leading data visualization platform. However, 2019 marked a significant strategic shift as they acquired Attunity — now known as Qlik Replicate — showing Qlik’s commitment to becoming a comprehensive data platform.

Qlik Replicate enriched the Qlik platform with exceptional data integration capabilities, setting the stage for further advancements within Qlik’s Data Integration platform. Qlik Compose soon followed, improving the data transformation capabilities of the platform. With these developments, Qlik’s evolution as an end-to-end data platform began to take shape.

Earlier this year, Qlik once again made headlines as it announced plans to acquire Talend, a move that generated significant buzz in the market. The recently finalized acquisition and expanded Qlik’s reach and propelled it even further as a key player in the data and analytics industry.

What Does Talend Bring to the Qlik Platform?

In a word: comprehensiveness. The integration of Talend completes Qlik’s vision of an end-to-end data platform, a goal they have diligently pursued over the past four years. With the addition of Talend’s Stitch for cloud-based sources, Qlik’s already robust data integration product suite gains even broader capabilities.

Additionally, Talend’s inclusion significantly strengthens Qlik’s data transformation capabilities. The Qlik product suite now boasts enhanced data quality and data governance tooling, expanding cataloging capabilities to encompass data quality, Master Data Management (MDM), workflow, and discovery tools.

Products like Talend Data Fabric build upon Qlik’s existing data transformation and data governance capabilities and may also improve use cases where customers aim to optimize and cut costs while managing their data lake.

Assessing Qlik and Talend Integration: Implications for Current Customers

How does the merger of Qlik and Talend directly affect existing customers and their business operations?

  • From the lens of a current Qlik customer:
As a current Qlik customer, consider how the Talend acquisition could expand your data management scope with a single provider, Qlik. If your team primarily uses QlikSense as its BI solution, now could be the time to reevaluate the combined functionalities of Qlik Replicate, Qlik Cloud Data Integration, Talend, and Stitch as an ‘all-in’ platform.

This stack of tools greatly expands Qlik’s reach across data ingestion, data governance, and the transformation (‘T’) aspect of the ETL process. The broad list of integrations with cloud and on-prem data connections substantially streamlines the tools needed to complete the ‘modern data stack’.

  • From the lens of a current Talend customer:
Take a look at your existing analytics and BI solution and see how it stacks against Qlik’s flexibility and overall comprehensiveness as a data and analytics platform. Features you get from Qlik — like lineage, automations, and AutoML — may broaden your capabilities as an organization and enable better management and self-service for your business users.

    Also consider:

    • QDI and Replicate as avenues for real-time data movements and simplified CDC for legacy on-prem systems.
    • Automations to expand orchestration across disparate systems and manage data pipelines.

How Qlik Redefines the Data Landscape

By acquiring Talend, Qlik asserts itself as a cloud-agnostic, end-to-end data platform suite. Rather than only focusing on analytics, Qlik now champions a platform that addresses every aspect of the data journey. This merger underscores Qlik’s progressive evolution into a comprehensive data platform, setting a new benchmark in the industry.

Now, businesses can tap into Qlik’s extensive suite of tools, driving innovation, streamlining processes, and unlocking the true potential of their data.
